    It's Cold

Let me rephrase that...It's COLD!!!!!!!! Not Wintery cold but certainly too chilly for early Fall. We went from one of the hottest summers the area can remember to what is possibly the coldest Autumn it has known in years. What does that mean for me?

I had intended to start sitting out on the front porch to practice the dulcimer or on the back porch to begin painting again. 40 degree temps have a way of telling fingers when it's far too cold to do something like that. Trust me!! Instead, I just may begin crocheting a few hats for what is predicted to be a fairly cold Winter. A friend told me yesterday that I didn't want to move to Michigan because it gets too cold. Cold doesn't bother me so long as I have more than half an hour to prepare for it and heat in the house.

Did I mention that our heat went out sometime over the summer and we just discovered it in the last week or so? More fun! It's okay. The heater we have ordered is sitting on a pick-up dock in California awaiting a truck and they tell us it should be here by Monday. We are NOT amused. Still, the blankets are in the washing machine and almost ready to go into the dryer. When that is done they will be warm enough for me to bundle up in and read a book. Maybe I'll read 'Frankenstein' or something of Longfellow's. Hmm...

I remember the Michigan winters. I was there when 21 inches of snow fell in 24 hours.  I saw a photo in the news paper of a gal having a baby brought out from an apartment complex on a snowmobile on a snow mobile. I will never forget the image.

Delayed heater delivery!!! Big Bad Bummer.

Enjoy your day. We talk off for L.A. tomorrow again to visit our single daughter.

brr.  it's been getting cold suddenly, here, as well.

I had never read Frankenstein until a couple of years ago, and I loved it.

perhaps you could do a video blog of you playing your dulcimer?

  • Foodhog

It is snowing and -5 where I live right now... it's to cold but only going to get colder.
I hope your heater gets in soon before it gets really cold!
I love curling up in a blanket right out of the dryer, so cozy. :)

Getting cold here as well! I bike to work in the morning and my ears are freezing! I still get hot by the time I'm done though with all that peddling ;)

Here in FLorida we still have days that are quite warm, but the nights are chilly (feels great). I hope you get your heater soon, but snuggled in a blanket, reading sounds great, and cold is a good excuse to make a fire. I love sitting by a fire.

Gah! I love Fall but Winter I am SO miserable !!!! I get cold when it's less than 80F out (I'm anemic is why) and my dad is a heat Nazi...he won't let us burn more than certain amount of wood/day.

Really. And if we complain he says 'Well bundle up if you're cold! We had to do it!"Last time he told me that I said "We don't have great big dead dinosaurs and mammoths to crawl up in and keep warm like you did."Happy Fall !

MO had 24 inches winter before last and it just kept coming and stayed on the ground almost all winter.  I do not like that!

Cold here too but no colder than it is and with electric mattress pad and when it gets really cold, an elect blanket too I stay warm.

Got some new flannel pjs to use around the house in the evenings.

i moved to nyc from la recently.. it's been getting a little cold but not too bad. i'm scared for the next few months though...

Same here, weather wise.  Hot as Hades all summer and now it's gone all frosty on us.  Stupid mother nature.  Seems like temps will moderate next week, though.  Tis a good thing!

    Sorry about the heater!

@ANVRSADDAY - Oh Frank! My son was born in the pick-up one the way to the hospital during a blizzard. That will be 40 years ago next week. We got 27 inches in 12 hours that night. Snow doesn't really bother me but intense cold and barometric changes can drive me nuts. Enjoy your visit.

Andreas, you know you would never want to leave London and all it has to offer, cold or not.

@plantinthewindow - Now we are getting advisories of possible tornadic weather coming through this next week. Somebody make up my mind for me! Frankenstein isn't a bad read and I've used its author in so many history lessons. Brilliant lady as was her mother. My problem (or so others may see it) is an absolute terror of public performing in any way except lecturing and teaching. For some reason, I have no fear of failure when it comes to those but cannot deal with anything else. On stormy nights you might see how I post on facebook like I know what I'm doing. I do. Same thing with teaching but just not that same feeling about playing my instruments. One friend who plays and performs says he thinks it's too private a thing for me to share and he may be right. For a long time, Dad was the only one who even knew I could play.

@Foodhog - I think the concern I have living in Tennessee right now is never knowing what might happen. It's why I work the radar on stormy nights. They are telling us Monday for the heater to arrive.

@MrTrololo - I'm laughing and imagining riding a bike to work from where I live. Let's see...ten miles of mountainous roads with no shoulder just to get to the interstate which would be suicidal and roughly fifteen miles on the interstate. Yeah, that's not going to happen!   I am reminded I could continue over to another mountainous back road instead of the interstate but I've reminded him that it is far more dangerous than any other road in the area. His response...But it's legal.

@Crystalinne - The one thing I cannot handle is heat. A variety of illnesses make it much harder on me than snow and the cold. I like fireplaces. Nice and cozy.

@Want2FitIn2Fat2Fit - The best winters I have spent were in the warmth and glow of a nice fireplace. Even in England we had a fireplace and in Alaska it was almost a necessity. Finding wood in either place was expensive so I can understand some of your Dad's thinking. I'm probably older than your Dad and we were seeing the dinosaurs die out quickly.

@TheSunnyC - Sunny, I can't use the electric things because of the health issues. If I could they might be worth a try but right now we have flannel sheets on the bed and that's a huge help during the winter months. Year before last we had nearly two feet of snow (quite a bit for eastern Tennessee) and discovered then that they had no snow plows for our area. It made for some VERY interesting days.

@aredotwice - The nice thing about NYC is that it just keeps on keeping on no matter what the weather. I think it may surprise you. Just dress appropriately and enjoy it on days when you can.

@warweasel - War, it's starting to make me wonder about the global shift reported about two years ago when they discovered that the magnetic North Pole is now located in Siberia. Oh well, nothing I can do about it except dress warmer or cooler depending on the temps. Hope all is well with you.

  • TheSunnyC

@history nut   Oh we have flannel sheets too!!!  lol

  • plantinthewindow

@History_Nut - perhaps you could approach playing with the mindset that you are teaching the listeners about a new instrument. ?
